The Warriors form Walled Lake Western did battle against cross-town foe Walled Lake Northern in a match-up of teams trying to get back to the .500 mark at 2-2, and also fighting for "The Wall" trophy awarded to the winner of this game every year.
The Knights won their first ever football game over the Warriors in what proved to be a shootout by a score of 50-39, behind senior quarterback Jason Tucker's school record setting game, Tucker finished with a record 589 total yards, and seven touchdowns — four passing, three rushing. Also a school record was Tucker's passing yards, throwing for 401 yards on 19-of-34 through the air.
"He stepped up and I told him the biggest thing was composure," said Walled Lake Northern head coach Brett Moore. "they're going to knock you down, dropped balls are going to happen, turnovers are going to happen.
"He's a general out there, he's a coach on the field. This year, I told him the most important thing you have to do is be a leader and show composure. He did that."
With 8:29 remaining in the game, the Knights reclaimed a lead they relinguished late in the first half. The strike was a 6-yard pass to senior running back Jasper Brown, giving Northern a 40-39 lead. The go-ahead extra point was kicked by senior Ben Cosgrove, who arrived to the game late because he was playing in a soccer game against Walled Lake Western in which he scored a goal. The Knights captured the victory in the soccer game as well.
"It was good, he showed composure, he played good," said Moore about the play of Cosgrove who also kicked a field goal shortly after the extra point to give Northern a 43-39 lead.
The Knights struck first in the second half, tying the game up on a 70-yard run on a quarterback keeper by Tucker, who broke several tackles before out-running the Warriors defense.
Warriors' QB Sam Welch had a great game, going 25-of-46 for 344 yards and five touchdowns, including a 67-yard throw to wide reciever Taylor Porras.
Porras finished the game with an impressive game-high 12 catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns.
"He just lays out for everything, he's a very coachable kid," said Warriors head coach Mike Zdebski on the play by the senior wide receiver. "He does thing correctly, and that's why he was in position to make all of those catches."
At halftime, the Warriors went into the locker room with a 33-26 lead after Welch led the team down the field in the final 2:30 to reagin the lead on a pass from Welch to senior split end Renauld Edwards with less than a minute on the clock.
Edwards hauled in six grabs for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
"When the line protects him and the kids get into space and run their routes, it all fits together, said Zdebski on the success from his quarterback. "Sam just does his part and he just takes care of his part of the equation."
The Knights jumped out to an early lead on Western behind a 3-yard run by Tucker and a 76-yard touchdown pass from Tucker to senior wideout Mike Neill, who sprinted past defenders to give the Knight a 13-0 lead after the failed conversion try.
Western battled back, forcing three straight turnovers inside the Northern 30-yard line that led the Warriors to 19 straight points and a 19-13 lead after the first quarter.
Neill finished the game with a phenomenal statline of seven catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow Northern wide reciever David Auger had a very strong game of his own, finishing with nine catches for 99 yards and one touchdown.
Moore has been pleased by the performances from his entire team this season. In every game Moore says he sees a different player step up and make plays for his team.
